Notes for Catherine “Kate” Cauley

Kate Cauley Jordan
"Mom Jordan," as she was called by the four Hufferd boys, came to U.S. April 16, 1883 aboard the "S.S. NESTORIAN" from Blacksod Bay, Galway to Boston. Listed on passenger list as Cath Cawley...15...F...Domestic. One of 11 members of “Cawley” [we spell it Cauley] family making the trip. Also aboard that ship was John Jordan...25...M...Laborer. The family story told of Catherine and John marrying at 16 in Ireland and traveling to U.S. but the passenger list now tells us John Jordan was 25 and she was 15 and listed as part of the Cauley family. Catherine, or Kate as many called her, mid-wifed for many doctors in Rushville. She was involved in so many deliveries that neighbors and parents called her "Katie Maw" as though she might be a second Maw to one of their youngsters.
Kate and some of her neighbors, several who were also Irish immigrants, would often speak in native Gaelic. Some other memories I have are of staying overnight and sleeping with Mom Jordan in her big feather bed. It would almost swallow you. Grandma always had a spare flannel gown and the coldest winter night never phased me. There were lots of big meals and holiday gatherings. Grandma raised chickens which usually ended up for Sunday dinner. I remember she would 'wring the neck' of the chosen bird, or sometimes she'd take her butcher knife out back and chop off a head. I know what is meant by "a chicken with its head off". It produces an amazing dance. After the execution came boiling in hot water and plucking the feathers. To a youngster it might seem brutal, but once you tasted Mom Jordan's fried chicken that was all forgotten.
Recently older brother John and I recounted some childhood memories. One of John's was that he often did not like what was being served, so he would go down to Farthings Grocery and charge to Grandma's bill the fixings for cold cut sandwiches. 13
