Son of Ellis Barlow of Barlow Hall, by his wife Anne Reddish, daughter of Otes Reddish of Reddish. Brother of Margaret Barlow Stanley (d. 1559), Countess of Derby.
Member of the 3rd Earl of Derby's council, 1546. From 1547 to 1555, Alexander represented Wigan in six Parliaments. In addition he served as a commissioner in local disputes and as trustee of Manchester Grammar School, 1556-1581. As 'my right well beloved servant', Alexander was one of the executors of his noble brother-in-law's will in 1572. His recusancy appears to have gone unprosecuted until 1583 when he was imprisoned shortly after his wife's death.11
