Notes for Zachary Lewis II
The Lewis family is descended from Zachary Lewis of Wales who received a land grant in Virginia in 1694. His grandson, Zachary Lewis (1731-1803) founded "Bel-Air" in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. While some of his children and grandchildren remained in Spotsylvania County, others moved to Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, and Texas. The Lewises intermarried with the Scott family which had originally settled in Pennsylvania, then relocated to Spotsylvania County. The Lewises also intermarried with the Daniel family of Stafford County, Virginia. All three families were prominent in Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties. Peter Vivian Daniel (1784-1860) served as lieutenant governor of Virginia and on the United States Supreme Court. An aunt of the Daniel and Lewis families, Jean Wood (1753-1823), was married to Governor James Wood (1741-1813)
