Notes for Johannes Conrad “John” Trewitz (Trevitz)
Johannes Conrad Trewitz and his twin brother Jacob were born on September 11, 1751, in Uckersdorf, Hesse, Germany. Both brothers left Germany aboard a ship called the _Crawford_ in 1773. The brothers were 22 years old when they arrived in America through the port of Philadelphia. They did not travel alone. The _Crawford_ was loaded with 64 Germans leaving their homeland in search for a better life in North America.

Conrad was a gifted Fraktur artist. Several watercolor Pennsylvania German Taufscheine (birth or baptismal certificates) wrought by Conrad Trevitz and dated 1770 and early 1800s were sold at auctions (2010-2015) for $4k-$7k. Six of his paintings are listed in Art Inventories Catalog, Smithsonian American Art Museums.

The following description of Conrad Trevitz's 1817 Fraktur is from this source:

"Trevits also spelled Trevitz, ....was a schoolmaster working from 1775 to 1825 in most of the counties in south central Pennsylvania. He immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1773 with Fraktur artist Christian Mertel. His work is easily identified by the pear-shaped flowers he included on most certificates. He also did not space out his text well with the result, as in this example, that he had to squeeze in changes and details. Examples of his work are found in most major Fraktur collections and information can be found in Russell and Corinne Earnest's Papers for Birth Dayes, Volume Two, pp. 762-765."

From Charles A. Fisher's 1969 book _Snyder County Pioneers_:

"Conrad Trewitz was born in 1750 and died in 1830. He is buried in the Portzline Cemetery in Perry Township, and his grave is marked C.T. He came to Penn Twp in 1776, or before. He enlisted in Captain Benjamin Weiser's Company, German Regiment, Continental Line, on August 15 , 1776, and served under Colonel Hunsicker until Hunsicker deserted to the British. Later Colonel Weldner commanded this regiment, and Conrad served under him until January, 1781, when he was discharged by General Muhlenberg in New Jersey. Trewitz applied for a pension. Michael Yeisley stated that he and Trewitz were messmates in Weiser's Company, and it seems that the pension was granted."

As a member of the German Regiment, there is a chance that Conrad crossed the Delaware with George Washington in December of 1777 and participated in the Battles of Trenton and Princeton.

He had five children with Maria Eva Dellinger.

He died in July 1830 having lived a long life of 78 years, and was buried in Mount Pleasant Mills, Pennsylvania. Portzline Family Cemetery is now located on State Game Lands 194. It is actually closer to Meiserville. From the North, when you get to Meiserville Inn on route 104, turn right on Mill Road, cross the creek and turn left on St. Thomas Road. Immediately after passing the Clark Hill Road intersection, there is a dirt road into the game lands. After going down it, you must walk down a short but steep hill and across the bridge to the cemetery. The path and cemetery and mowed and maintained nicely. Turkeys and other wildlife are common sights nearby, as are local hunters.

I am Conrad Trevitz's 5th great-granddaughter and just recently learned of my ancestor. I made a memorial video about his life and the cemetery where he is buried:
