Josiah was born in VA and received a land grant on Yellow Creek in Harlan, Harlan, KY.
When he was 22 years old, he had at least one illegitimate child with Barbara Risner, who later married a Cox.
He later married Sarah "Sally" Litton Hoskins and had numerous legitimate children.
