Notes for John Lee Whitaker
The Union Pork House and Whitaker Brothers Elevator Company.

Mr. Joseph Whitaker, the former proprietor of both establishments, retired from active business several years ago, but still owns the ground and buildings used by his successors, and which are located on Second street, at the ferry landing.

There are fully two blocks of ground occupied on one side and two lots on the opposite side of the street on which are built two reservoirs, from whence the concerns draw their supply of water, Each reservoir has a capacity of from 250 to 300 barrels.

The firm of Whitaker Brothers is composed of Messrs. J. L. and Vanaken Whitaker, both gentlemen, being sons of the former proprietor. Bowing ourselves into the presence of Mr. J . L. Whitaker, we gleaned the following Items of interest in relation to his business: The concern make a speciality of shelling corn and sell to eastern markets, such as St. Louis, Chicago and New York. Their capacity iis three thousand bushels per day, but they have storage for ten thousand bushels. They handle grain for other parties if desired. Most of the corn Is raised in this county. At present tho firm ships their goods in bulk by rail. but they expect to ship In barges shortly. The quality of last year's crop of corn, as may be imagined, was not as good as in previous years, on account of the extremely wet weather. It must not be understood that the firm handle corn only, on the contrary, they will make every effort to get a corner in wheat and other grain, both for themselves and for other parties. There is a practical and systematic order of things at the elevator. The corn received In car loads is weighed on the premises, then it is thrown into bins, from which it is conducted through the sheller, thence into the separator, which separates the grain from the cob. The shelled corn is carried into bins In the elevator, from whence it is loaded into cars ready for shipment. The cobs are excellently adapted for firing purposes. The cleaner, as well as the sheller, are of Barnard & Leas make, of Moline. The firm of Whltaker Bros. is composed of active young men, well experienced in the business, and who will leave no stone unturned to make their mark in the business world. We are glad to note that their efforts have been appreciated, and that they have been successtui, with bright prospects ahead.
