Notes for Noma Alzina Imel
According to a story told to Fr. Benedict in 1974 by Letty Thomas and Lavinia Morrow, Noma Imel Sanner was epileptic as well as a bit unpleasant. She could call on her epileptic condition pretty much at will. These episodes were especially used to get her mother (Viletta Riegel Imel) to come to stay with her. Letty told the story of visiting her Aunt Noma while Grandma was away visiting a relative far away for a week or so. Aunt Noma apparently had enough of taking care of Letty and probably other children so she told Letty to write her grandmother a postcard saying that Noma was going to be sick and she should hurry home. Letty wrote but did not mail the card (not wanting to disobey her aunt but not wanting to disturb her grandmother’s trip either). She knew of her aunt’s tendency to threaten a sick spell but also knew she wouldn’t let it strike until her mother got there whether it was two days or two weeks.
